April 15- Perks quiz and Perks paper

Today we took a short and easy quiz on the book (easy if you've read it).

We also brainstormed some ideas for a paper we will write tomorrow. Here is the outline for the paper:

Perks of being a wallflower final paper

The first chapter of Perks ends with this line from Charlie:

The reason I wrote this letter is because I start high school tomorrow and I am really afraid of going. Love always, Charlie
The last chapter of Perks ends with this line:
Tomorrow, I start my sophomore year of high school. And believe it or not, I'm really not that afraid of going.
Clearly, this is a “coming of age” novel. Charlie has an exciting but difficult first year of school, discovering that he was sexually molested as a young child by his favorite aunt, but ultimately able to begin his next year happier and healthier than his previous year.

ESSAY QUESTION:
How was Charlie shaped by the events of his freshman year of school.?

Things to consider:

q  This should not be a summary of the book. I’ve already read the book, I don’t need it summarized.

q  This should be a well-structured paper. Make it easy for your reader to understand what your thesis is.

q  This should have examples from the book. If you’re going to make a point, Back It Up. Otherwise, you’ll be like Charlie’s sister – continuing to talk, but not really saying anything.

q  Try to find your Voice- the more people can hear your personality in your writing, the more likely people will want to keep reading and the more effectively you’ll be able to express your message.
